Making great wine starts from the ground up. Our organic and regenerative farming ensures we start with the finest plants and fruit. As the grapes come to our winery, our goal is to highlight with honesty what this windy site provides: great acidity and balanced fruit flavors. We embrace our family's philosophy that wine is meant to be enjoyed with loved ones around the table with food.

our approach to Winemaking

It is often said that great wine starts in the vineyard. We favor the term wine growing and carry this philosophy through to our cellar. One of the beauties of an estate winery is that we are physically close to the source, sample frequently, and pick at the precise moment of maturity. Traveling for the fruit is never more than a few minutes, ensuring that grapes arrive in tanks in prime condition. Once in our cellar, we aim for gentle, minimal intervention winemaking that blends science to ensure quality control and art to truly showcase the vibrancy of our estate wines. We pull from a variety of winemaking practices such as long cold soaks, native fermentations, careful barrel selection favoring French oak, stirring of lees, and minimal racking to ensure our wines reflect our unique terroir.

Farming Practices

Our intention is that Keller Estate family winery remains in our family for generations, and this keeps us honest. As we farm our Petaluma Gap vineyards, this has taken us down a path of education and stewardship. In addition to having over 10 years of Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing (CCSW) certification, in 2025 we will be certified organic in both our vineyards and olive groves. We believe in certification as a transparent way of communicating our intentions. Beyond that, we also believe that a multi-agricultural perspective keeps the soil healthy. Our flock of 100 Dorper sheep provide natural mowing, fertilizing, and fire prevention throughout the year. Owl and bat boxes are part of our strategic gopher control, while our bees are essential members of our pollinator team.

Biodiversity

We are surrounded by protected nature—the ancient Alman and the Petaluma Marshlands—totaling over 5,000 acres of pristine wetlands. These vital ecosystems serve as natural water filters, flood control systems, and critical habitat for hundreds of species including endangered Clapper Rails and Salt Marsh Harvest Mice. The marshlands act like giant sponges, detaining stormwater while their biological processes naturally purify the water before it reaches major waterways. Among the world's most productive ecosystems, these wetlands support over 75% of California's migratory birds and provide essential nursery habitat for fish and wildlife. As part of our commitment to biodiversity, we maintain year-round ponds on our estate, have planted milkweed to support monarch butterfly migration, and keep beehives that produce our estate honey while supporting pollination throughout our vineyards and olive groves. Living at Keller Estate means we're stewards of this remarkable landscape where our sustainable farming practices complement nature's own systems.
