There's no better time to visit a winery in Sonoma Country than during harvest.

The vines are at their most alive — fruit hanging heavy, colors shifting from green to gold to deep purple, the estate moving with a kind of focused energy that only comes around once a year. Everyone on the property is watching the fruit, checking the sugar levels, waiting for the right morning to pick. If you've never seen it up close, it's worth arranging your calendar around.

Harvest at Keller Estate

At Keller Estate, harvest typically runs from late August through late September. The Petaluma Gap's cool nights extend the growing season, letting the grapes develop slowly and fully before they're picked — which is part of what gives this region's wines their character. When you visit during this window, you're not just tasting wine. You're standing in the middle of the process that makes it: the fruit still on the vine, the decisions still being made, the whole thing still in motion.

It's a different experience than visiting in the spring, when the vines are just leafing out, or in winter, when they're bare and dormant. September is when everything the rest of the year has been building toward finally happens.

Tips for Visiting Wine Country During Harvest

• Come on a weekday if you can. Harvest weekends fill up fast across Sonoma County. Midweek visits are quieter, and you get more time with the people actually pouring the wine.
• Book in advance. Wineries are at their busiest during harvest. Keller Estate is open Wednesday through Sunday by reservation — plan ahead rather than showing up and hoping.
• Dress in layers. The Petaluma Gap lives up to its name. Mornings are cool and foggy, afternoons warm up considerably, and evenings cool back down again. Bring something for the wind.
• Ask questions. During harvest, winemaking decisions are being made in real time. Ask what's being picked that week, what the vintage is looking like, what's got the winemaking team excited this year. You'll get answers nobody could give you in April.
• Stay for the view. Keller Estate sits above the Petaluma River Valley, with views out to the Coastal Mountains. In September, with the vines turning and the afternoon light going soft and gold, it's one of the most beautiful spots in Sonoma County — worth lingering over a glass rather than rushing off.
